Abstract:

Fundamentals are presented for fast Ethernet LANs. The latest relevant National & International publications are surveyed. The present system is given the acronym DISTCOMPTEC: DISTributed COMPuting TEChniques experimental evaluation with fast lans. DISTCOMPTEC experimental results are presented of performance tests to compare two Internet protocols (TCP/IP and UDP/IP). Using Windows NT 4.0 operating system, parameters evaluated included Average Service Time for both TCP and UDP, Throughput and Success Ratio for TCP only. DISTCOMPTEC consists of a number of stations connected together in a hub configuration, receiving and transmitting packets to record the parameters required for the evaluation. DISTCOMPTEC results show that the Average Service Timeincreases when the background load level increases for TCP protocol. Increasing the background load level is more effective on large packet sizes than small packet sizes. The background load level has very small effect on the Average Service Time for the UDP protocol for all packet sizes. The results also show that the achievable Throughput is very small compared to network bandwidth for TCP protocol.
