A study of the antihypertensive effect of some drugs and medicinal plants on induced hypertension in rabbits

Abstract:

This study was aiming to compare the antihypertensive efficasy of the drug (candesartan ) and some medicinal plants namely (Hibiscus subdariffa* Plantago major and Teucrium polium) in animal model of induced hypertension. Two well known antihypertensive drugs namely (atenolol and furosemide) have been used too, for comparison with the other tested agents. In this study local domestic rabbits were divided into two main groups. In (group one) hypertension has been induced by using hydrocortisone and hypertonic saline injection and the agents applied to this group were atenolol, furosemide, candesartan ,aqueous extract of Hibiscus subdariffa .Plantago major and Teucrium polium, where as in (group two) phenylephrine injection was used to induce hypertension and the agents applied to this group were the same agents used in group one .Normal saline was used as a control . In addition to measuring the systolic and diastolic blood pressure, other parameters have been taken into consideration namely, the heart rate, blood flow and urine output in order to predict the possible mechanisms through which the tested agents affect blood pressure and to have an overall outlook on different actions of them. . In the (group one) ,it has been found that candesartan was significantly effective in lowering both systolic and diastolic blood pressure and increasing blood flow when given at a dose of 0.15 mg/Kg (p<0.05). Candesartan was less effective in lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure than furosemide but was more effective than atenolol. The aqueous extract of Hibiscus subdariffa was effective in lowering the systolic and diastolic blood pressure in a dose of 0.5mg/kg , but it was less effective than furosemide, atenolol and candesartan in lowering both systolic and diastolic blood pressures. The aqueous extract of Hibiscus subdariffa also showed to be significantly effective in increasing blood flow and urine output. • While in the (group two) (treated with phenylephrine) candesartan was more effective in lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure than atenolol and furosemide . The aqueous extract of Hibiscus subdariffa showed no significant effect on the parameters used in the study. • The aqueous extracts of Plantago major and Teucrium polium showed no significant effect on the parameters used in the study in both groups.
