Under the sponsorship of the President of Al-Nahrain University, Professor Dr. Ali Abdul Aziz Al-Shawi, and under the supervision of the Assistant President for Scientific Affairs, Prof.Dr. Omar Farouk Abdul Rasheed, Al-Nahrain University holds its second scientific conference entitled “The Role of Universities in Rejecting Extremism and Building National Unity” on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, at the Grand Conference Hall.
The conference, organized by the Department of Scientific Affairs at the university presidency under the slogan “Moderate Thought… A Sustainable Future,” attended by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, several university presidents, a number of deans, heads of departments, faculty members, and students, in addition to a distinguished group of academics, researchers, and specialists.
The conference aimes to highlight the pivotal role of educational institutions in protecting young people’s minds from extremist ideologies and promoting the values of national unity and social cohesion.
The conference includes three main themes addressing the most significant challenges and solutions in this field. The first theme, “The Social and Ethical Responsibility of the University,” discussed the role of academic institutions in rejecting extremism and strengthening national unity. It is chaired by Assistant Prof. Dr. Nada Mutair Abbas, Director of the Women’s Affairs Department at the Ministry of Higher Education, with the participation of Prof. Dr. Safaa Taqi Al-Issari, President of Al-Mustansiriya University; Professor Dr. Jumaa Salman Jiyad, President of Al-Karkh University; and Prof.Dr. Haider Talib Mohammed Ali Al-Imara, President of Al-Bayan University.
The second theme, “Media Ethics and Professional Responsibility,” focuses on ways to confront intellectual extremism and hate speech through media outlets and social networking platforms. It is chaired by Professor Dr. Akram Faraj Al-Rubaie, Head of the Media Department at Al-Mustaqbal University, with contributions from Professor Dr. Fadhil Mohammed Hussein Al-Badrani, Deputy Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities; Professor Dr. Ammar Taher Mohammed, Dean of the College of Media at University of Baghdad; and Lecturer Dr. Ziyad Mukhlif Hassan, Head of the Radio and Television Department at Al-Turath University.
The third theme, “The Role of Colleges of Political Science,” addressed the importance of incorporating concepts of tolerance and national unity into political science curricula and research. The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Osama Murtadha Baqir, Dean of the College of Political Science at Al-Nahrain University, with the participation of Professor Dr. Hisham Hikmat Abdul Sattar, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Nahi, and Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ghalib Mohi.
The conference concludes with the distribution of certificates of appreciation and shields to the participants and members of the scientific committee in recognition of their efforts in ensuring the success of this academic event. The participants emphasizes the importance of continuing such activities to reinforce the values of moderation and build a conscious and cohesive society.
