A scholarly book entitled Iraq and the Diplomacy of Mediation in Resolving Regional Conflicts: A Study of the Malaysian Experience has been published by Professor Dr. Shaimaa Adel Fadhil, an instructor at the College of Political Science, University of Al-Nahrain, in cooperation with Advisor Mohammed Falih Hamoud. The book was issued by Hatrik Publishing, Printing, and Distribution House – Baghdad.
The book sheds light on the importance of mediation diplomacy and the potential for benefiting from the Malaysian experience in this field, drawing lessons and insights that could assist Iraq in its efforts to achieve peace and stability, particularly in light of the ongoing political and military tensions and conflicts in the Middle East. It also analyzes the foundations and key pillars of the Malaysian experience in diplomatic mediation.
The study arrived at a number of conclusions, most notably that Malaysia’s adoption of a mediation role is neither random nor improvised, but rather the result of a careful assessment of its political and economic capabilities and their development in line with its objective of becoming a regionally accepted mediator. The study also indicates that this model is applicable to Iraq if genuine political will is present, as Iraq possesses economic, political, and geographical assets that qualify it to assume an effective role in diplomatic mediation, provided these assets are strategically invested to consolidate its regional and international presence, similar to the Malaysian model.
